The season 2008 - a splendid year for the Reisa River

The catch in the Reisa River for the 2008-season was fabulous. Reisa River had the third highest catch of salmon-bearing rivers in the northern of Norway, and perhaps best of all; the biggest Atlantic salmon are back again.

There were totally 12100 kg Atlantic salmon caught in the Reisa River during the season last year. In the beginning of the season's first three weeks there were taken a lot of big salmon from 10 kg and heavier. The catch statistics shows that the average weight of all salmon was about 6.5 kg.

The biggest reported salmon was a male salmon at 22.7 kg, which were caught by Hans Tore Larsen in Zone 8, on Friday 11th of July (see photo to left). For smaller salmon, the end result shows a total catch of about 3500 kg salmon under 7 kg.

The catch of Sea trout was somewhat slower than expected, with a total catch of about 790 kg. It is almost one half from 2007. We believe that the main reason for this, is due to the introduction of the prohibition on the use of bait in 2008, which traditionally is very effective in fishing for sea trout. When we counted salmon at the end of September 2008, we observed a lot of nice sea trout. The somewhat low catch last season can also be caused by a late rise. We believe, therefore, that the we still will see nice catches of sea trout in the years ahead.
